Holiday Helpers 2-5-2010
Bill Cody

There is a lot going on during holidays that is of interest to the
twins. In our case they are just 2 1/2 but they want to help with
and see everything. So, what do you do?

Here is what I try. Obviously they should not be on ladders outside
hanging decorations or handling delicate stuff inside the house at
this age. I have found ways to engage them individually and satisfy
their desire to be part of it all.  The kids are excellent at
holding a string of lights while dad hangs them. They are great at
stacking spent light bulbs in little piles. They excel at picking
up at the end of the job. They are delighted when light strings
actually work when retrieved from the storage boxes. In our home
where we have a Christmas tree, the bottom 2 feet of the tree is
theirs to decorate as they wish (with an occasional adjustment by
mom or dad after bed time).

It is some times tempting to do things yourself because it might be
tidier or faster but it pays to let go. Numerous little parts of
the process are more than appropriate for the twins to manage
themselves. All you need to do is identify them and hand them off.
It is just another developmental step for them in the long process
of growing up.
